Note:  In any web browser, if credentials are not automatically filled, Then start entering your user id in the user id field and the browser will automatically suggest your user id like a drop down option. Select your id from there. This will autofill the username and password field.

How to Reveal Password Hidden Behind Asterisk on Chrome

I’ve noticed a strange thing over the internet for the google search “How to show password on chrome”. I’ve seen a some articles in the search results, which actually suggest the reader to install a google chrome extensions/Apps & Third party apps on their windows 10 Pc / Mac OS X Devices.

To show hidden password on Chrome, We don’t need any extension or app. They are not needed for other browsers too.  We can use inspect element to reveal password which is stored on your chrome browser.

Here’s how to use inspect element to reveal Hidden password on chrome browser :

  • Open Google Chrome on your windows 10 PC or Mac OS device.
  • Navigate to the Web site, for which you want to retrieve your password.
  • Wait for the browser to load the website and autofill your user id and password in the respective fields (User id field and Password field)
  • Right-Click on the password text box, This will open the context menu.
  • Tap on the “inspect element” in the context menu.

  • If you are a Mac user, then you’ll have “Inspect” option instead of “Inspect Element”.
  • This will open the “Developer Tools” for Google Chrome.
  • When the developer tools tab is opened at the bottom, The browser automatically focuses on the line related to “Password Field”.

  • Now you have to find the field ” input type = Password”. Double click the word ” Password” to start editing it.

How To See Hidden Password On Safari In Mac OS (OS X)

On Mac OS (Apple’s OSX), Safari has always been the default web browser. Just like on Google Chrome and Firefox browsers – We use inspect element to find and reveal the password on Safari in Mac os / OSx. process to reveal passwords in Google Chrome and Firefox is same on Both windows and Mac OS. By default, the developer menu for safari is not enabled. So we need to enable it before try to reveal the password hidden behind the dots.

How to Activate Developer Menu on Safari

  • Open Safari Web browser on your Mac OS / OSX.
  • Go to Safari preferences > Advanced Tab
  • Enable the developer menu to present at the end of the “advanced tab”

Reveal hidden password on a Mac OS X : In Safari

  • Open Safari web browser on your MacBook.
  • Navigate to the website that you desire to unmask your password for.

  • Right click on the password field, Select the Inspect option from the context menu.
  • In the developer tools , the control automatically moves to the password related node.
  • Replace the word “Password” with “text” just like we did for google chrome browser. Change the password to text to show password on mac
  • Press “Enter” on your keyword and the password has been revealed in password field of the browser. The Hidden Password on mac has been revealed

How to Easily View Password Hidden Behind Asterisk on Edge in Windows 10

Revealing the password hidden behind asterisks marks is slightly different in Microsoft edge browser when compared with other web browsers.

By default, the developer tools option on Microsoft edge has been disabled. we can’t find the “inspect element” option in Microsoft edge browser easily like in other web browsers. So we need to enable the developer tools mode, In order to reveal the password behind stars.

How to Enable Developer tools Options on Edge

  • Open Microsoft Edge Browser on Your Windows 10 PC.
  • From the Top Right Corner, Open the Options for Edge Browser.
  • From the options, Click on the F12 Developer Menu.
  • This will enable the developer tools options in Edge browser.
  • Right-Click on the browser, To check and confirm that you have the Inspect element and View page source options enabled on your edge browser.

Now simply Open a new tab, Navigate to the website for which you want to view your saved password behind dots. The rest of the procedure is same as in google chrome.


How to See Password Hidden Behind Asterisk on Firefox

The normal procedure to view password behind asterisk mark in firefox is same as we did for Google chrome. But firefox provides another useful option for us. A pretty easy one made available keeping the users in mind.  Instead of choosing “Inspect element” to go to developer tools and editing the code, we can choose the “Fill Password” option provided in firefox.

View Hidden Password on Firefox Using Saved Logins Option

As of my knowledge, Right now this feature is available only on Mozilla Firefox. Using this feature, You can view all your passwords at one place. No Need to visit every website, No need to edit the code in developer tools for every website.

  • Right-Click on the password of the website.
  • From the right click menu, Choose the “Fill Password” option.

  • In the “Saved logins” window, select the user id for which you want to reveal the saved password.
  • Click ” Show Passwords”. (You can choose multiple login details at a time holding the Ctrl key) How to View Saved Logins on Firefox
  • A confirmation prompt will appear now, Confirm your action by clicking on “YES”
  • This will reveal your saved password for that user id on Firefox browser.

Here’s a small tip: By Default, The website you are visiting currently is filled in the search bar of this View Saved logins window. (Refer the below pic). Clear the website name in the search bar of the window and you will be able to see all the saved passwords of various websites stored on your firefox browser.

Show Hidden Password On Firefox Using Inspect Element

To use inspect element to reveal the password on Firefox, We need to go to the desired website.

  • Once the browser auto-fills the credentials, Right click on the password field and select “Inspect element”. The control automatically highlights the password field related node in the developer’s menu. Show Hidden Password Behind Asterisk on Firefox Using Inspect Element

 

  • Look for the substring type=”password”  & change it to type=”text”, by double clicking on the word “password” and editing it.

  • Press the “Enter” on your keyboard and see the password has been revealed in the password field of the browser

    1. Hello Kilnel, The process for sea monkey is same as all the other web browsers.

      Right click on the password filed and goto the developer tools menu, in the developer tools menu, replace the word “Password” with “text”

      and you will the see the password.
